Carlo Pellicani (after Carlo Buzzi), Lot Leaves Sodom

1807-13
Marble
West façade, Milan Cathedral

In Genesis 19:12-26 God determines to destroy the city of Sodom, sparing only Lot, the one just man living there. His angel tells Lot and his family not to look back on Sodom as they leave, but the wife disobeys and becomes a pillar of salt.

In the sculpture the wife stands alone in the background, having taken the fateful glance toward the walled city. In the foreground Lot and his daughters walk away – the latter despondent and the former prayerful.
